Is it a twit of a waste of time?

Twitter is a hot topic - fact! So much so that it is kind of uncool all of a sudden, with FriendFeed the new kid on the block. Just like Friends Reunited MySpace and Facebook before it, there is an argument that Twitter is a victim of its own success. That said, its a victim worth an alleged $1bn so lets not get too upset.

At Marketing the art of we have a debate planned around Social Media - is everyone getting carried away?. The ethos of the debate is that there will always be a new FriendFeed, a new Facebook and a new Twitter. While each will have their champions, they will almost inevitably be from the IT Crowd, and will always want to be trend-setters (does anyone actually update Friends Reunited anymore?). As such, each social media vehicle has a short window of opportunity for business, and by the time it is in Heat Magazine and discussed on Loose Women, that window has closed.

Twitter is great we don't doubt that, but its benefit to business is still hugely debatable. It's good for networking, but not actually as good as networking, and its good for socialising, but not actually as good as socialising. And while it can be useful to certain sectors it is not a business tool.

Don't agree? Then see you on the 12th November to debate it.
